Soft Toys and Plush: Choosing a Cuddly First Friend
Almost every child has a soft toy they carry everywhere. A first cuddly friend can bring comfort at bedtime, on car trips and on new adventures, so it is worth choosing one that is safe, soft and built to last.
What to look for in a baby plush toy
- Secure stitching: seams should be firm, and any embroidered features are safer than glued or sewn-on parts for young babies.
- Baby-friendly size: small enough to hold, big enough that it cannot be swallowed.
- Easy to clean: check the care label. Washable plush is a big help once it is dropped, chewed and loved.
- Soft, simple design: gentle fabrics and no loose accessories for the youngest babies.
- The right age label: always follow the age guidance on the tag.
Activity plush: soft toys with a bit extra
Some plush toys come with extras like crinkle panels, rattles or teether rings. These activity toys combine cuddles with sensory play, and many have a clip so they can attach to a pram or car seat. Our Disney Baby Angel Plush Activity Toy is one example, with crinkle textures, teether rings and a clip-on strap, suitable from birth.
A note on safe sleep
For babies under 12 months, Australian safe sleeping guidance recommends keeping the cot clear of soft toys, pillows and loose bedding. Save cuddly toys for supervised awake time and introduce one as a bedtime comfort item when your child is older.
Keeping plush toys fresh
Follow the washing instructions on the label, let the toy dry fully and check seams and fastenings after each wash. If a favourite toy is looking worn, it is time to retire it.
Plush toys make lovely gifts
A soft toy is a classic baby shower, newborn or first birthday gift. Pair it with a card or a gift set for something extra special.
